Hi, my name is Jocelyn, and my all time favorite coffee house drink is the Salted Caramel Mocha Latte.

From my very first sip a few years ago, I have been totally and completely in love with this drink.  I look forward to indulging in quite a few of them every time they come back to Starbucks.  Who else thinks they should carry this drink all year long?

There is only one problem with this love of mine. My wallet doesn’t like to part with $5 each time I stop.

It got me thinking how I could recreate this wonderful drink in my kitchen and save myself (and you) some mulah while we are staying home.

I decided to use this Salted Caramel Pumpkin Latte as my starting point.  Obviously, I left out the pumpkin though because it is not fall anymore.

We also had some leftover hot chocolate packets in our cupboard that I decided to use those to enhance the chocolate flavor.

PRO TIP: You can also use chocolate syrup in place of the hot chocolate mix, and it tastes great too.

Aerolatte frothing milk in a saucepan

Now what sets this drink apart is the sea salt sprinkle that goes on top.  The store bought ones have something else to them. So, I did some google research and found out that the coffee shops use a blend of turbinado sugar and sea salt.

On my last grocery run, I picked up a large box of the sugar and a new sea salt grinder for our cupboard.  They are getting good use, because I am loving the chance to make a yummy salted caramel latte whenever I want.

The topping is completely optional, so don’t worry if you can’t find these or don’t have them on hand right now.  The coffee drink still tastes amazing without it.

How to make a Salted Caramel Mocha Latte:

  1. Stir together milk, caramel topping, hot chocolate mix, and sea salt in a small saucepan.
  2. Heat until very warm.  Do not let the milk come to a boil.
  3. Froth or blend the mixture until it is foamy. Pour into a cup.
  4. Slowly pour hot coffee into one side of the mug.
  5. Top with Cool Whip or homemade whipped cream.
  6. Drizzle with caramel and sprinkle with sea salt and sugar.

How to froth milk for a latte:

To froth the warm milk mixture, you can use an aerolatte or a blender.  The blender mades frothing so easy. Even fat free milk can get a good froth going on that way.

You can also pour the mixture into a mason jar, tighten the lid, and shake until frothy.

What kind of milk do you use in a homemade latte?

You can use any kind of milk in this latte, so feel free to use whole, 2%, almond, or fat free. Basically whatever in your fridge at the moment is fine!
